Second Annual Archbishop’s Gala Benefits Hospitals and Agencies

NEWARK, N.J. Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark, hosted the second annual Archbishop’s Gala on April 26, 2007, at Birchwood Manor in Whippany. More than 500 guests attended the event, which raised nearly $450,000 to support the programs and services of Cathedral Healthcare System, Mount Carmel Guild Behavioral Health System, and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark.

Honored guests included Connie and Bob Dwyer of Short Hills, recipients of this year’s Archbishop’s Leadership Award. The Dwyers were recognized for their generous support of The Connie Dwyer Breast Center at Saint Michael’s Medical Center, which provides state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases. Berkley Heights resident William C. Freda, vice chairman and Northeast Regional Managing Partner at Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, received Humanitarian of the Year honors. Freda serves on the board of trustees of Catholic Health and Human Services Corporation and previously served as chairman of the board of trustees for Catholic Charities.

Other honorees included the 2007 inductees into the Cathedral Healthcare System Physician Hall of Fame: Christine Zolli, M.D., of Saint James Hospital; Hemlata Bhatia, M.D, of Columbus Hospital; and John W. Sensakovic, M.D., Ph.D., of Saint Michael Medical Center. Lucy Mugambi of Newark was the recipient of this year’s Spirit of the Heart Award, which is awarded by Catholic Charities to clients who show outstanding courage and resolve under trying circumstances.

“Our hospitals and agencies exist to do God’s work,” said Henry J. Amoroso, president and CEO of Catholic Health and Human Services Corporation, which manages the Archdiocese’s health-care and social-service ministries. “We are blessed by the outstanding generosity of people throughout Greater Newark who share our commitment to our mission of compassionate care, and I am grateful for the support and leadership of Archbishop Myers.”
