GROUND IS BROKEN FOR SENIOR CITIZEN HOUSING IN KEARNY SPONSORED BY CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE ARCHDIOCESE
OF NEWARK

KEARNY, NJ (September 14, 2004) – Groundbreaking ceremonies took place today for a 50-unit, senior citizen housing development sponsored by Domus Corporation, an affiliate of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark. Kearny Senior Residence will be located at 681-697 Schuyler Avenue on property made available by the Township of Kearny and funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark, presided at the ceremonies. He said, “Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, one of the largest private social service agencies in the state, focuses on addressing the needs of the most vulnerable. Helping to provide quality housing for senior citizens is one of our goals.” Participants in the ceremonies included Donald M. Daniels, chairman and CEO of Catholic Health and Human Services Corporation; Henry J. Amoroso, Esq., vice chairman and COO of Catholic Health and Human Services Corporation and chairman of the board of Catholic Charities; Phillip Frese, Ph.D., CPA, executive director of Catholic Charities and president of Domus Corporation; John Westervelt, secretary and treasurer of Domus Corporation; Mayor Alberto G. Santos of Kearny; Walter Kreher, director of the Newark Multi-Family Program Center of HUD; and Don Lubin of the Affordable Housing Group. Dr. Frese said, “Providing homes for senior citizens in need of affordable housing is an initiative embraced by Archbishop Myers and the Archdiocese of Newark. Mayor Santos of Kearny showed great insight into the need for senior housing, and the township allowed Domus to develop this project.

This significant partnership between Catholic Charities, HUD, and the Township of Kearny will benefit senior citizens far into the future.” The architect for the Kearny Senior Residence is Stephen Cohen of Princeton. Del-Sano Contracting Company of Union will erect the building. Funding for the project is set at under $7 million. Domus Corporation, a nonprofit organization, was founded in 1995 with the express mission to provide affordable housing for those in need.

To date, the corporation has developed 302 units in Essex, Hudson, and Union counties, three of the four counties served by the Archdiocese of Newark, which includes Bergen County, said Frese. Domus founded and manages a 60-unit senior citizen residence in Union City and a 70-unit senior residence in Elizabeth. The corporation also sponsored an 87-unit affordable housing residence in Jersey City, as well as Carmel House, Jersey City and Sunrise House in Newark, both of which provide single room occupancy accommodations.
